Why was the Go-Barry deployed?
Heijmans and Rijkswaterstaat share the common goal of getting everyone home safely every day. This prompted them to launch the ¨if it can be safer, do it¨ initiative. One of the components that emerged from this initiative is the deployment of the Go-Barry.
Heijmans' preference is to close the road completely, thereby minimising the risk of collision. However, this also has adverse effects as traffic is then forced to use the underlying road network. For this reason, a traffic system is often placed on the road whereby traffic is placed in one lane (a so-called 4-0 system). This allows the work to be carried out safely while allowing regular traffic to continue. In cases where the work is of short duration, shields or cones are placed to work behind. This is considered unsafe and for this reason Heijmans chose to use the Go-Barry. Both at a site where the Go-Barry was in a crossing and at a site where grouting work was being carried out, it operated successfully.
